2007 - the first year

Creation

Originally written on: Thursday, 20 March 2008 02:27 CET

It happened on a stormy night during March. UT2004 players were meeting at the IRC-channel #ctf.pickup on Quakenet in order to play some UT2004 5v5 nwCTF matches. People !add `d up and !remove `d themselves, but finally some pickups happened.

After a few days playing there, I noticed about an upcoming nwCTF cup. It sounded interesting, since I had more fun in nwCTF during that time, than in iCTF. So I asked around on the TeamSpeak2 pickup server aswell as in the IRC channels did some /amsg to gather at least five people, just to play once a week one cupmatch.

It was like 23:30 CET about closing time, but ezzY from vpf and CB admin, told me that if I want to play in the cup, that I shall hurry, because the signups will close in about 30 minutes.

Hectically I asked around, if someone wants to play or not. Signups closed, but ezzY made an exception and I had a little bit more of extra time to signup the team, give them a rating and talk about the players about a clanname. 10 minutes later we created the clan.

Here you can see the the ClanBase log, that shows the action.

2007 March 26
01:12 Clan created as 'BEER - What do you need more to know?'
01:12 Added member(s) ZeriouS
01:16 Added member(s) BEER|r!x`
01:17 Added member(s) rookie
01:20 Added member(s) Liefje
01:26 Added member(s) the_roxor
02:15 Added member(s) Dysfunction

So you can see the very first clanmembers on this table. r!x` has been a TDM player and was new to nwCTF. rookie was a player who already played within 3xF (the Formidable Flag Force) the mod nwCTF so he had some experience. Liefje was new to nwCTF aswell and played it for fun in the pickups, and has been successful already with her girl clan girlz 0f destruction. Belgium the_roxor was a Bombing Run player for FADA and iF.

The clanname BEER was one of a variety of ideas we had, and well BEER* "sounded great" said Liefje. So well, why not, BEER was the name. To be honest I would have wanted to take a ... more meaningful name, so that's why I changed during the day the clanname in description.
2007 March 26

12:51 Changed clanname to "BEER - Behavior, Effect, Expectation, Results"
13:36 Changed clanname to "BEER* - Behavior, Effect, Expectation, Results"
16:37 "rookie" changed name to "ouzo"
17:50 Added member(s) ScrMz!*

rookie changed his nickname to ouzo, a greek alcoholic drink and someone else prominent found his way to the player lineup ScrMz!*.

But the first cupseason was about to start so we had time to fill up our lineup with more players who want to play UT2004 ctf for fun.

2007 March 29

21:14 Added member(s) TT
21:27 Added member(s) trishy

Three days later Sweden TT and Denmark trishy joined the clan, who played already together in the clan 3xF. Sweden TT played with his clan Fury Instinct TDM and Denmark trishy was a great Bombing Run player.

On hat day SixFeet- joined our clan. He played for Desire to Fire (D2F) some iCTF cups, so I knew he had skill and was fun to play with. His game comments are unforgettable amused

So, with that lineup of players we tried our best to compete in the first UT2004 nwCTF season. We agreed for one day each week to play the cupmatches, and only to play the cupmatches. No training, no hassle. Real life is more important than the clan. The clan BEER* is just a fun factor besides maybe other already existing clans.

The first cup: UT2004 CTF OpenCup Spring 2007

During the cup I decided to give BEER* it´s current name, the meaning for the abbreviation BEER.

April 11 2:02 Changed clanname to "Behavior, Effect, Expectation, Results"

The cup lasted from April to end of June

The player ouzo decided to change his playername

April 28 19:12 "ouzo" changed name to "m3rc4admin"

And once again a playername change...
May 31 19:14 "m3rc4admin" changed name to "kOnG"

We were doing surprisingly good! In our division we made it to the playoffs and were about to win even the finale!

But in the end we didn´t won that cup. Well... at least we came that far, for the first time, with some mixed players who never ever played before together, who are brought together from various gametypes. I must admit, that my decision in the finale to play CTF-UCMP4-Virility twice as 5th and decider map instead of CTF-Grendelkeep was not the best decision. tongueinch:

Anyway, let´s move on.

in and out

Okay, the first cup was finished, summer was passing by and ...

August 11 15:14 Removed member(s) ScrMz!*

I don´t remember if I removed this player or he did remove himself out of our lineup... Anyway one less. He didn´t play with us one cupmatch.

September 5 20:34 Removed member(s) kOnG

Before the next cup season started, I removed kOnG from our lineup, since he was getting on my nerves. Really >.> Some kind of abusive behaviour towards other people is not tolerable.

One goes, a few more come!

September 18 22:26 Added member(s) Stauder

Stauder, from the clan Druckwelle, has been competing in the premier league as CTF player before, so he brought in some more experience and power to our clan.

September 20 21:57 Added member(s) nAsTy

France nAsTy is from the same BombingRun clan as the_roxor: FADA.

September 24 22:03 Added member(s) pSy&BtB

I cannot recall exactly details about him unhappy

October 2 23:07 Added member(s) Ste-V

Netherlands Ste-V from the clan Insane Gaming, is a very experienced and skilled UT2004 Instagib CTF player. He asked me, if he could play some nwCTF matches with us, so I decided to give it a go!

October 8 23:42 Added member(s) edelstoff

edelstoff aka edvans from the clan Formidable Flag Force, the same nwCTF and BombingRun clan in which Denmark trishy and kOnG (aka kIrI aka robot) were in. + CTF power!

October 12 00:05 Added member(s) Zelos

Netherlands Zelos from the clan Surreal Gaming, a dutch UT2004 iCTF premier league clan. Hell yeah!

It may be noted, that the iCTF players joined in the first place to play some random CTF matches. iCTF games were still remaining for them to play with their original clan.

winter 2007: Quadrathlathon and CTF cup
Two more new cups were awaiting on us. This time it´s been a QuadCup, which means that we had to play four gametypes in UT2004: BombingRun, CaptureTheFlag, DoubleDomination and TeamArenaMaster. Oh... TAM... I totally hate that gametype! But CTF is great for us, also BR, since we had some dedicated BombingRun players in our team! Besides of this mix cup, we also participated in a CTF cup, ... this time in the first division instead of the second, due to our success in the previous season.

Unfortunately this CTF season was not as successful as the previous one. See the results for yourself

Forget about CTF. We were still a fresh team, with a little bit of changed lineup and the removal of kOnG made actually a heavy impact on the outcome of the CTF performance. Our added CTF players were sometimes there, but not always for the cup matches, so we couldn´t plan with a fixed lineup.

Compared to the CTF cup, we did win some matches in the QuadCup, especially the BR maps. As it turns out, our BR performance will stay decent for the next seasons.

In between, the ClanBase system did shorten the character length for a clan name down from ... enough chars to fit our 50-character long clan name "Behaviour Effect Expectation Results" down to 47 characters. This made the clan name look like this:

November 10 12:28 Changed clanname to "Behavior Effect Expectation Resu

As soon as I noticed it, I tried some variants of the name.

November 17 12:32 Changed clanname to "BehaviorEffectExpectationResults"
November 17 05:48 Changed clanname to "BEER*"

So there you go with the explanation, why we only have "BEER*" as name, although it´s completely different. Obey the stars! We are BEERstars!

Shortly after the cups have been completed some members left the clan.

December 7 19:56 Removed member(s) edelstoff
December 24 01:33 Removed member(s) Dysfunction

:| Dysfunction was the first server sponsor for us, but since he went more and more inactive, he was not anymore interested in sponsoring us. Reasonable.

That´s the end of the first year with the BEER* ... Now I will take a break and summarize the next year 2008 later.
